PS3 has a self-cleaning function Date: 2008-04-14 10:21, by Everybody knows that dust is the nemesis of home gaming consoles, and no matter how hard to try to keep your console clean, with regular wipe downs and other dust busting measures, there will always be dust to clog and choke your machine. Well, you may not be aware of this because I certainly wasn’t, but the PS3 has a self cleaning function built into it. It’s a diagnostic for the fans in the console, but also serves to blast out any dust clinging to the fans or the components inside the machine. I read about it at stupid o’clock last night and as soon as I woke today I went a checked it out, and yes, it does work. So much so that the online community is clamouring for it to be included as a working feature in a future firmware update, and after seeing it in action, we agree. My 360 grinds like a monster these days and I’d love it if there were a function on it to allow me try and blast air through it. So, how does it work? Simple. Turn off your PS3 from the switch at the rear of the machine. Hold down the Eject button and then flick on the switch, and you’ll hear all the fans in the machine spinning furiously, and sounding like a 360 pretty much! The fans will spin for around 10 seconds or so, and if you place your hand at the back of the machine you can feel the air being blasted out the back. Once the cycle finishes, the power light will flash red, so you need to flick the power off at the switch again. Once you turn it back on, it has been cleaned.
The self cleaning function is only built into the 40Gb model of the console so those of you who have been upset at missing out on the 60Gb one have something to be happy about.
