A "tick" is the basic unit of time in Universe Wars. For basic players one tick passes every 15 minutes. When a building or military unit is in production, it will not finish until a determined number of ticks have passed.
It is possible to get ticks which pass every 10 minutes, but to do so you must first purchase a Plus Account for $5.00, via a PayPal account or a credit card.

Ticks can be stimulated by using tokens. One tokens makes one tick pass, with a maximum of 2520 tokens used per day. The price for tokens is $1 equals 5 tokens. Tokens can be purchased through PayPal by clicking [Earn/Use] to direct you to the page to purchase it.
